Welcome to the web site of Faith United Church of Christ
Iowa City, Iowa

Our communion table is surrounded by items for the Crisis Center food pantry.  The first Sunday of each month we celebrated communion. As we partake of the elements from God's table we are reminded that many people in our world have empty tables.  Faith folks are invited to bring donations to the Crisis Center Food Pantry on the first Sunday of each month so that we can fill others tables as well.

Each week the members and friends of Faith Church pack 40 food packs for the students at Mark Twain Elementary School.  These are individual grocery backs to be taken home on Friday by the students for the weekend.

Wednesday, September 25, 2013 members and friends of Faith United Church of Christ gathered for the Annual Blessing of the Pets service.  This year we were joined by cats, dogs and a pretty little bunny rabbit.

Our liturgy began with a short verse: "How many are your works, O God!  In wisdom you have made them all."  Psalm 104:24

We sang "God of the Sparrow God of the Whale", read scriptures lessons from Genesis, Psalm 104 and Romans.  We offered prayers of confession for our human failures to tend better our pets and our plant.

We heard words of forgiveness and pardon for our shortcomings.  We offered prayers of thanks and blessing for our pets.  We sang "All Things Bright and Beautiful"

Pastor Bob then moved to each pet and each pet caretaker to lay hands on them, bless them in God's name and offer thanks for the gifts pets and pet caretakers give to one another.

This blessing of the animals service is just one our special services scheduled for fall.  Why not join us each Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. for worship?  You will always be welcome!

Our annual celebration of fall will be Sunday, October 20, 2013 at 9:30 a.m.  Join us for readings, poetry, songs, and art works that celebrate the season.

No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey. . .You are welcome here!

The summer season has been an active and busy one for Faith United Church of Christ.  As September begins we look to return to some familiar ministries and seek to begin some new ones.  Please take the time to review the information you will find on the pages of this web sight for worship information, upcoming ministry and programs and some basic information about Faith United Church of Christ.  Leave comments for us, if you'd like.  Join us on Sunday morning for worship at 9:30 a.m.  The remainder of this month's blog is devoted to updating you on our back to school back pack project for Mark Twain Elementary.  It seems to me the best way to do so is to share with you the information received on August 27, 2013 from Pam Zehr, our back pack program coordinator:

School Supplies
"It’s been a week since our Back to School project for Mark Twain. With a week to reflect, I’ve got several thoughts running around my head that I’d like to share with you. First of all, by all measures, our project was a spectacular achievement. There were a number of pieces to this grand puzzle, each piece requiring skill and helping hands and prayer, and our “little church that could” always came through.

Back Packs ready to be filled

The book bags were superbly fashioned by our master seamstresses. And this was no small feat; 285 bags were created in total, each a reflection of patience and love.
More School Supplies

School supplies were purchased and donated by Faith as well as the ToGather Together program, and then prayerfully blessed at the end of Sunday services. They were counted and organized and then packaged in grade specific bundles with the speed and efficiency and accuracy to rival any Fortune 500.

Distribution of back packs
The distribution of the supplies culminated the season, and with just one hiccup was also a grand success. The Mark Twain gymnasium was stifling hot that evening, but the excitement of the children as they picked out their new backpacks lifted the air as well as our spirits.

More back packs to give

To see those smiles was so invigorating; the children and parents, but also the teachers with the anticipation of the new school year on their faces. So many words of thanks, so many smiles, so many expressions of gratitude.

In the last newsletter we made a call for volunteers for each of these activities, and you came out in force. We had plenty of helpful hands, making the tasks at hand go smoothly, but also allowing for lightheartedness and laughter. In the last newsletter we also made a call for donations. We carefully crunched and calculated our expenses, and asked for a fundraising goal of $1,000 for our back to school project. Knowing this was an enormous amount of money, we were still cautiously optimistic it could be done. In fact, by the end [of August] our back to school donations totaled $2,194, a sum that was clearly above and beyond any of our expectations.
Just take a look around the sanctuary at the paper dolls encircling the space, symbolic of the children sponsored not only THIS year by these donations, but eagerly awaiting for school to start NEXT year. Truly amazing.

Also remarkable is the height of our Tower of Tissues for Twain. We asked for 250 boxes of tissues, one for each child we sponsored this year. Again, we knew this was a tall order but one we were hopeful could be achieved. When all boxes were counted, we had actually received 308, again far surpassing our requests. So our Tower of Tissues easily reaches the sanctuary ceiling with enormous cartons stacked on either side.
Dozens of volunteers, thousands of dollars, hundreds of tissues. Numbers don’t lie; numbers tell the story. Equally true, smiles don’t lie; smiles tell the story. Smiles on the faces of school children who are starting their new year on equal footing as their classmates. Smiles from grateful parents and teachers who sense the value and potential of every child. And smiles amongst ourselves knowing that this was a task well done. Too schmaltzy to think of Christ smiling as He walks the halls of Twain?

Faith Church. Not just the little church that could, but the little church that does. My heartfelt thanks to each of you."

Well, Christmas in July was a wonderful success again in 2013!!!  A cash donation to DVIP for $299.00 was given in addition to all the gifts received.  We also received $245.00 in gift cards for Sally's.  Hair and skin productes for African-American women were purchased with those gift cards.  Take a look all all the items under the Tropical Christmas Tree.
Thanks to all who made our gifts to DVIP possible.

Check out our Facebook page( for more pictures of results from Undie Sunday and from our purchase of hair and skin products from Sally's with your generous gift-card gifts!

Pam Zehr, our back to school backpack guru gives us this message:

Already Faith Church is in full swing in support of Mark Twain Elementary School.  Backpacks are being created, supplies are being donated and purchased, with plans to put them all together in time to distribute them to our community children in need.

This time of year is always crazy busy for me; the fabric is flying and school supplies slip and slide in the trunk of my car.  But it is also a season of great satisfaction and joy, seeing the “little church that could” donate time and energy and resources in support of our neighborhood children.  To see the children at the ice cream social pick out their favorite back packs and proudly sport them across their shoulders as they take them to their classrooms.  To hear from thankful parents howmuch our efforts mean to them.  To talk to the teachers and support staff of Mark Twain as they convey their gratefulness for our efforts; it’s a time of great happiness and satisfaction.

Thank you friends for all you do to make this time of year so successful; for the children of Mark Twain, for their teachers and families, but also for us.  It’s through our hard work and sacrifice and laughter that we share who we are with the community, and it’s all good.

A Tower of Tissue for Twain

Our back to school campaign for Mark Twain is in high gear with thousands of pencils and hundreds of binders and glue sticks and markers reporting for active duty.  What we still need to recruit is a squadron of tissues to help care for noses running out of formation.  We have been asked to supply 250 boxes of tissues this year, and we thought we’d do our best to achieve that goal with a tissue drive this fall, followed by a refresher in the spring.  As boxes arrive at the church we’ll stand them in formation, and see if we can build a TOWER of TISSUES for TWAIN.

Filling Backpacks August 18th; Can You Help?

Do you find yourself wistfully walking down aisles of crayons and pencils and colorful markers?  Satisfy that need to hold new school supplies in your hands by helping us fill backpacks for Mark Twain School.  We’ll start our assembly lines immediately after church on August 18th, and will fill 250 bags with grade specific supplies.  Many hands make the process that much smoother, so please share an hour with us if you can.

Distributing Backpacks August 19th; Can You Help?

If you can spare an hour on Monday August 19th, come witness first-hand how excited the Twain children are to pick out their very own backpack full of school supplies.  We will be distributing the bags at Mark Twain School from 6 to 7 pm; further details to be announced.  This is the culmination of months of hard work, and the smiles from grateful children, parents, and teachers make it all worthwhile.  Come share in the experience if you can.

Please join us for Back-to-School month in August at Faith United Church of Christ.  You are welcome in worship, welcome in ministry, welcome in a common faith in Jesus.

We worship at 9:30 each Sunday morning.  Why not join us?

No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here!

Christmas in July

The Annual "Christmas in July" event is underway!!  This year's theme has a tropical nature in the decor of our worship area.  Please help add to our visual theme with you thoughts and ideas our Christmas in the tropics.[Check out the pictures of the worship area that follow this article]

Mary McInroy for the Social Ministries Committee writes the following:

"When I called the DVIP office, they specifically asked for new underwear and socks for the residents.  Those of you familiar with Faith know we, ahem, have that end covered with……

UNDIE Sunday—bring these items any Sunday in July, of course, but the 21st has been designated as “Official “UNDIE Sunday

1-Diapers, esp. sizes 4-5-6
2-Women’s, boys and girls underwear (ALL SIZES)
3-baby wipes

This year, the DVIP representative also highlighted the need for African-American hair and skin care items.  I spoke with the Manager at Sally’s Beauty Supply, and she gave me names for some good, basic items. * In fact—you can buy gift cards at Sally’s (in the Sycamore Mall, at the Panera’s end) and put them in the boxes at church, or give to a Social Ministries committee member or to Pastor Bob.  At the end of the month, we will do one big Sally’s shopping spree, and the Manager will give us a lower price on everything because it is for a church/charitable cause.

Bring other personal care items also, e.g., lotions, shampoos, mouthwash, dental products, small cosmetic bags, etc.  Bring home those small bottles you’ll see in hotels during your travels this summer.  In fact, save them up all year and toss them in the DVIP gift boxes at church during July.

Financial gifts of any amount are always welcomed.

Thanks for your generosity to DVIP. DVIP thinks of us as the church that “emphasizes” clean underwear during our drive (I’m not kidding)."

*African-American personal care product suggestions from Sally’s in the Sycamore Mall
Hair care:  Hawaiian Silky Miracle Worker; BB Pump It Up Styling Spritz; BB Oil Moisturizer Hair Lotion; ORL Lock & Twist Gel (popular with kids and grown-ups); SoftSheen-Carson Let’s Jam Shining & Conditioning Gel; ampro Pro Styl protein styling gel: 360 Style Pomade
Skin care:  Tropiclear number one Skin Lightening Cream (helps get rid of spots); Beyond Belief “Refresh & Refine” skin care products (various products in green & white bottles, e.g., pore refining, oil control, etc.); Refresh skin renewal (astringent); cocoa butter lotions, e.g., Proclaim brand.
