Here are a few pictures of the back to school supplies purchased by Faith for use at Mark Twain.  Items were purchased to fill 262 back packs at grade appropriate levels.

Enjoy the pictures of supplies as they completed ringed our worship space on Sunday, August 10, 2014

What you see are folders, pencils, pencil boxes, spiral notebooks, hard three ring binders, erase-able markers, colored pencils, colors, and much more.

Also included were erasers, rulers, scissors, and composition books.

Then it came time to pack all the supplies in individual bags for transport to Mark Twain Elementary School.

Sorting, collating, arranging, bagging, checking, and making sure that each bag full of supplies got to the correct grade level was the next task.

The final check to make sure every thing  made it to the bag.  Then the bags of supplies along with 299 homemade back packs were transported to school for distribution on August 14.

Here are some pictures at school

Some packed bags for kindergarten, first and second grade awaiting some empty back packs to fill on the left

Some bags awaiting 5-6 graders on the right.

And here are some empty back packs waiting a child to make a selection.

Another successful year of purchasing supplies, making back packs, filling bags with supplies, and distributing supplies and back packs to the students of Mark Twain.  Thanks for all the support!!!

so says Lucy to Charlie Brown through her "telephone" of string and tin cans.  Charlie Brown is on the other end of that string that completely circles the worship space at Faith United Church of Christ.  The string contains the "packages of items" (some 325+) given to DVIP, plus sacks filled with personal hygiene items, lotions, and shampoos.

As the picture to the left shows, there were hundreds of pairs of underwear and socks for women, men, girls, and boys of all sizes and shapes.  Thanks to all for making Christmas In July 2014 another wonderful Christmas!

The past several years we have been engaged with back to school supplies and back packs.   Well, in 2014 we are again; but with some significant changes.
Members and friends of Faith UCC have cut, pieced, and stitched all kinds of material together to make some TERRIFIC back packs for more than 270 students at Mark Twain Elementary this year.
Now, we must purchase the supplies that go into the back packs based on grade-level needs.  That will require some significant monetary outlay and we need help raising the funds for this important ministry.  We already have some funds on hand; but we will need approximately $1500.00 to cover our supply list.  We will receive our August Birthday offering on Sunday, August 24, 2014 for the benefit of back to school supplies.  Please plan to give generously on that Sunday.
Meanwhile---supplies are being purchased and empty back packs await packing on Sunday, August 10, 2014.  Come to worship, then stay following to assist with the packing.  So get on your dancin' shoes and be ready to Boogie!!!
Distribution is set at Twain Elementary on Thursday, August 14 with classes beginning on August 19.

Wednesday, July 23, 2014

There is still time to bring underwear, socks, or any of the other numerous items on the list for DVIP!!!  Please bring your gifts in by Sunday, July 27 so that we can distribute them that morning following worship.

Sunday, June 1, 2014 at a specially called Congregational Meeting, Faith United Church of Christ voted unanimously to adopted a covenant for Economic Justice.  The vote culminated an almost two year period of study, reflection, action, and prayer.  Please read the adopted covenant and join us at Faith as we continue to work for economic justice in our world.

Faith United Church of Christ Economic Justice Covenant
Adopted June 1, 2014
Jesus proclaimed his ministry in the temple by reading from Isaiah: “The Spirit of God is upon me, because God has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. God has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of God’s favor.” Luke 4: 18-19. The 2009 United Church of Christ Economic Justice Covenant reminds us that “The Holy Scriptures, from the Pentateuch through the Prophets, and from Jesus to St. Paul impress upon the people of God’s Covenant that they are responsible to God for the well being of the last and the least in the human community.

Christians are called to do. To be a Christian is to be a part of creation that necessitates the extension of God's embrace. Embracing is doing: it is the acceptance of and the extension of the ongoing resurrection; it is the acceptance of the ongoing crucifixion. In enacting an Economic Justice Covenant, we are following Faith United Church of Christ’s Statement of Purpose by acknowledging  “God’s presence in the human affairs of today, as God has been involved throughout history...We, as Christians, accept this calling to carry out the vision of Jesus Christ for our age.”

Although God has provided the world with abundance, poverty and want persist. In the past, Faith United Church of Christ has striven to build a more inclusive world in its Open and Affirming Covenant, and has addressed economic inequality in its work toward equitable consumption practices and in the many acts of mercy it pursues. Therefore, in keeping with Jesus’ proclamation of his ministry, the constant summoning of the scriptures and Faith United Church of Christ’s own history, we, the congregation of Faith United Church of Christ of Iowa City do hereby enter into covenant with each other and with the world at large, to strive toward a more equitable distribution of God’s abundance in the world.
Therefore, be it resolved by the congregation of Faith United Church of Christ that we will:

1.    Create an ongoing program to discern the means of redressing the inequitable distribution of God’s abundance in our congregation, our community, our nation, and our world.

2.    Act upon the revelations found in that discernment on a personal, congregational, local, national and global scale.

3.    Pledge to continue our current acts of mercy, regularly evaluating their role in altering the current distribution of abundance and altering our actions to fit the altering needs.

4.    Maintain this covenant as a living document by attaching an ongoing list of our evolving acts of mercy accompanied by an explanation of the needs that make those acts of mercy necessary so that all may share in God’s abundance. Further, we the congregation charge the Council of Faith United Church of Christ to regularly update this list, or to empower a designated body of its choosing to do so, in a manner it deems appropriate, making those changes known to the congregation in a timely and well- documented fashion.

Faith United Church of Christ is an open, affirming, just peace, accessible to all, economic justice covenant congregation.

Please join us for worship each Sunday Morning at 9:30 a.m.

More than 12 dozen Home-baked and hand frosted and decorated cupcakes were presented to residents of Shelter House as a Valentine Celebration.

Personal Care items, over the counter remedies, paper products, and other items were also gathered during the month of February to be shared with the residents of Shelter House.  An entire back portion of a van was required to transport the items to Shelter House.

A special offering was held the last Sunday in February, our annual Pancake Supper on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and our regular budget contribution to Shelter House resulted in a check for $874.00.
