FAITH UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST
IOWA CITY

Welcomes

Dr. Shelly Tochluk

Monday, July 11, 2016, 7:00 P.M.  Faith United Church of Christ will host Shelly Tochluk, PhD., Chair, Education Department, Mount Saint Mary’s University, Los Angeles, California.  She will be sharing information from her latest book, “Living in The Tension: The Quest for A Spiritualized Racial Justice”
An educator, with a background in psychology, Dr. Tochluk spent ten years as a researcher, counselor, and teacher in California’s public schools. She now trains teachers to work with Los Angeles’ diverse school population as Chair of the Education Department at Mount Saint Mary’s University. Her personal dedication to confront issues of race developed first through her participation with UCLA’s NCAA Division-1 All-American Track and Field 4X400 meter relay team and later through her inner city teaching experiences. She currently works with AWARE-LA (Alliance of White Anti-Racists Everywhere-Los Angeles). With this group, she co-created a workshop series that leads white people into a deeper understanding of their personal relationship to race, white privilege, and systemic racism.
A limited number of Living in the Tension: A Quest for a Spiritualized Racial Justice may be purchased at the church office for $20.00.  Please call 319-338-5238 or email faithucc2014@gmail.com to arrange for the pick-up of a book.

Vivian Hahn, a talented Iowa City artist and Faith UCC member, has been drawing for many decades.  She will be holding her first community art exhibit at Faith United Church of Christ. Vivian’s artwork will be on display at Faith UCC throughout the month of June.
